THE JAMES LAST ORCHESTRA

06 April 2011
The NIA, Birmingham

The James Last Orchestra is a German big-band orchestra with strings. The orchestra was formed in 1964 as a studio orchestra and is led by jazz musician Hans Last. The orchestra started touring in 1968, and has been extremely successful.

James Last has taken much influence when composing his music from the world of rock and pop for example his version of Here Comes the Sun from the album Beachparty 2 which is influenced by the version sung by Richie Havens in the film Woodstock. Another one of James’ songs The Lonely Shepherd featured in the soundtrack to Quentin Tarantino's film Kill Bill Vol. 1. His live concerts are full of energy where a combination of skillful arranging and talented musicians give some surprising performances.

Last has won numerous popular and professional awards, including Billboard magazine's Star of the Year trophy in 1976, and he was honoured for lifetime achievement with the German ECHO prize in 1994.
